We didn’t have any swimming pools in Stonewall, at least not like a lot of towns such as Allen have. In 1944 I was still sort of new to living there but thought I was in hog heaven anyway, having lived in Centrahoma until 1944. So, it was one day when 4 of us boys who had been down on Buck Creek in the July heat spotted this little pool of water. It was near the old water tower and its overflow had created this little pond of cool clear water and it was shielded from view by brush and cane. What better place to take a quick swim?
Read moreThis Sunday is Mother’s Day. A very special time for many of us who have such special memories of our very special mothers. When I was a child, my mom was the person I ran to when I was in pain or hurting. Or when I was worried about God and other celestial matters, you can be sure I ran to her for advice. She was my first advisor after I learned I needed to give my life to Jesus. She never gave me any bad advice in these matters.

And Russia, in actions that would have made Hitler blush with jealousy, is at it again. If you ever took any European History and studied Russia and its relationships to the Balkans, you can see what I mean. Russia wants it right now.

It peaked out back in 1918 after it had killed about 500 million people worldwide. To this day we have to take our annual flu shots since the old “flu” still lurks about. That seems to be the way this current Pandemic is working out. It may always lurk about.

The old house dad had rented was in horrible shape. Our new landlord had stored hay in it and now he had rented it to my broke and, as mom put it, “gullible” dad. I remember the giant red-ant bed in the front yard. No drinking water. Had to haul it. The outdoor toilet was hiding out in
Read moreOur recent sleet-based ice storm left the Allen area shut down. Schools and churches quit when confronted with heavy ice in their parking lots. Temperatures went down to the single digits. Some pipes froze up and everyone cranked up their heat as the high winds hunted and found ways to get inside some of the ancient houses we live in. But I am thankful that the electric and natural gas kept on flowing. No one seemed to be worried about the costs. At least before the bills come in later.
Read moreThis past Monday I found myself attending the funeral of my good friend, Linda Spain. Linda was a very successful person. I don’t mean she was wealthy or any of those things we often think about when we speak of a successful person. Linda was good at what she did. She was a good Christian Lady who was an essential part of her church and its family. She will be sorely missed at the First Baptist Church as she was a great Sunday School Teacher and a notable church leader. Yes, very successful.
