Rites held for Rosella Walden
Rosella Mae Walden, 93, passed away February 23, 2024, in Holdenville, Oklahoma. She was born southeast of Wetumka on April 8, 1930, to Robert Odell and Lola Marie (Bratcher) Storts.
She married Harvey Hughes on April 15, 1949, and they made their home south of Wetumka at the home site where Harvey was born. They raised cattle, peanuts, cotton, soybeans, certified grain seed for resale and vegetables for local grocery stores on the family farm.
Rosie was preceded in death by her parents, Odell and Lola; sisters Dorothy Storts and June Sorrell; brothers Robert, Bill and Marvin Storts; husband Harvey; and daughter-in-law LeAnne Hughes.
She is survived by her sisters Carolyn Barrowman and Janice Eller of Oklahoma City. Also, brothers Jimmy Storts of Boone, North Carolina, and Larry Storts of Allen, Oklahoma. Rosie is also survived by her husband Alton Walden whom she married on June 25, 2013; her sons Mike Hughes and wife Mary, Steve Hughes and wife Ronda, and Glen Hughes; foster-daughter LaDonna Kating; many grandchildren, great grandchildren and greatgreat grandchildren and a host of many nieces and nephews and friends.
She was a homemaker, gardener, farmer, seamstress, and finally a nurse aid at Holdenville Hospital for several years.
Rosie was a musician and singer playing piano, guitar and harmonica. She played piano part time in some churches where she attended. She sang in trios and quartets with her sisters and other singers from the church. She also participated in gospel singing conventions in the 60’s and 70’s. As a young teenager she played music on many nights with a crowd of her neighbors and family including her dad who played the fiddle while she played the guitar and harmonica simultaneously. She loved those times.
Funeral service was 2:00 pm, Wednesday, February 28th, at Hudson-Phillips Funeral Home Chapel in Holdenville, with Pastor Gail Beck officiating. Interment followed at Wetumka Cemetery. Pallbearers were Coal Dilday, Gene Twomey, Gideon Twomey, Stephen Hughes, David Storts and Jon Sorrell Services were under the direction of Hudson-Phillips Funeral Home, Holdenville.
