Sammie Mathis Passes Away

Sammie Dean Mathis passed away Wednesday, September 11, 2024, at this home in Atwood, Oklahoma at the age of 82.

Sammie was born July 29, 1942 in Atwood, Oklahoma to Gus “Toots” Dean Mathis and Eupha Glee (Chaffin) Mathis. He graduated from Calvin Public School. Sammie married Francine Casstevens in Pampa, Texas. He was a rancher.

Sammie was a member of the Atwood Narazene Church. He was the Foreman at Maywood Manufacturing in Amarillo, Texas for 36 years. Sammie worked at The Store in Calvin for over 20 years, Hot Shot driver for Sundowner, and drove for Call-ARide. He enjoyed buying and selling real estate and spending time with his family and friends. Sam, the man, would slip in a sly quiet remark to bring a smile to all of us. He was always a hard worker. Sometimes holding down three jobs so that his family would never want for anything. He never missed a day’s work. He hated retirement and was always looking for a job for his wife...(one of his many jokes). He brought broken families together and they became one large loving family.

Sammie is preceded in death by his parents; siblings Barbara Sue Rivers, Jerry Wallace and Bud Mathis.

He is survived by his wife Francine, of the home; children Mitchell Dean Mathis and wife Megg of Amarillo, Texas, Sheri West and husband Roger of Amarillo, Texas, Frank Gibbs and wife Shirley of Amarillo, Texas, Michele Tupin of Atwood, Oklahoma, and Danny Mathis of Amarillo, Texas; 12 grandchildren; siblings Ben Mathis of Calvin, Joel Mathis and wife Debbie of Calvin, Pete Mathis and wife Dena of Eufaula and Marsha Mathis of Atwood. Sammie is also survived by numerous other relatives and friends.

Funeral service was 10:00 a.m. Saturday, September 14th, at Atwood Nazarene Church with Pastor Larry McDaniel officiating. Interment followed at Atwood Cemetery.

Pallbearers were Brad Rivers, Bruce Rivers, Trae Gibbs, Trevor Gibbs, Scooter Mathis and Chance Mathis. Honorary pallbearers were Gage Galbreath, Keegan McCormick, Cody Raney and Bob Rivers.

Services are under the direction of Hudson-Phillips Funeral Home, Holdenville, Oklahoma.
