Service held for Jerry Martin

Jerry Wayne Martin passed away at his home in Calvin, Oklahoma on Thursday, September 12, 2024, at the age of 77 years.

Jerry was the son of Everett Ervin ‘Ebb’ Martin and Lorean (Stiles) Martin, born on March 26, 1947, in Holdenville, Oklahoma. He was brought up and attended schools in the Calvin area, and graduated Calvin High School with the Class of 1965.

He married Odessa Mae Vandeveer in Calvin on February 4, 1966, and they lived their entire lives in the house they built on the old Martin homeplace in 1967. They were blessed with two daughters, Kimberly and Tisha.

Jerry worked as a farmer/rancher and pipeliner. He served four terms as Hughes County Commissioner for District #3, from 1990 to 2016. He served on the Calvin School Board, and on thirteen other various boards as County Commissioner.

Jerry’s interests and hobbies were varied. He enjoyed golfing with friends, riding motorcycles, spending time at the lake, and he and Odessa were part of a bowling league. His favorite things were guns, auctions, and cars. He loved collecting and shooting guns, and especially enjoyed skeet shooting. He was not an avid hunter but enjoyed hunting in the company of friends. He loved working on and tinkering with all kinds of cars. He loved going to any type of auction, but particularly enjoyed farm and equipment auctions. He was a member of the Masonic Lodge of Calvin. He attended Calvin First Baptist Church. He was well respected in his hometown, county and community, and dearly beloved by his family and friends.

Jerry is preceded in death by his wife of fiftyeight years, Odessa Martin; his parents, Ebb and Lorean Martin; his great-grandson, Beckham James Smith; and three siblings, Sue Parks, Shirley McPhetridge, and Ronnie Martin.

He is survived by two daughters, Kimberly Martin (Jason Smith) of Calvin, and Tisha Tatum (Bryan) of Shawnee; five granddaughters, Kelley Smith and Pazli Smith, both of Calvin, Alissa White of Pauls Valley, Kylee Mendenhall (Kaleb) and Kenzi Williams (Jake) all of Shawnee; three greatgrandchildren, Bentley, Beau, and Brynlee; other family members and a host of friends.

Funeral services were held on Monday, September 16th, 2:00 pm at Calvin School Auditorium, and Jerry was laid to rest at Calvin Cemetery. Rev. Kurtis Stoll served as the officiating minister, with Mr. Jake Williams assisting.

Pallbearers were Chad Martin, Corey Martin, Jason Smith, Bryan Tatum, Kaleb Mendenhall, Jake Williams, Kevin Luker, and Kendall Luker. Honorary pallbearers were Paul Blaylock, Danny McPhetridge, Fred Pace, Derek Pace, Gail Wilbanks, David Tharp, David Mills, Bill Nall, Benny Mathis, Russell Anderson, Leroy Dunn, Penn McPhetridge, Carl Collard, Jack Chapman, and Travis Pearison.
